The Giants of Tarangire
Walking Among Giants: Why Tarangire is Africa’s Ultimate Elephant Sanctuary

While the Serengeti has the fame, Tarangire has the “Giants.” If you want to see elephants—not just one or two, but hundreds at a time—this is where your journey must begin.
Body: Often overlooked by travelers rushing to the Serengeti, Tarangire National Park is a landscape defined by two things: ancient, towering Baobab trees and massive herds of African elephants. During the dry season (June to October), Tarangire becomes a magnet for wildlife as the Tarangire River becomes the only reliable water source in the region.
At Viaggio, we love Tarangire because it offers a more intimate, “raw” safari feel. You’ll witness elephant families—from majestic matriarchs to playful, tiny calves—digging for water in the dry riverbeds. It’s a masterclass in wildlife survival and social structure. Beyond the elephants, keep an eye out for the “tree-climbing pythons” and the rare Fringe-eared Oryx, a desert-dwelling antelope you won’t find in the other northern parks.
